Floyd Buenavente works as an SEO consultant in the Philippines. In this interview from our SEO consultant series he talks to us about how he keeps up with the latest SEO trends and how he deals with clients who have suffered from a Google ranking penalty. If you are an SEO consultant and would like to be interviewed by Expert SEO Bournemouth then please contact us.
Hi Floyd, great to meet you! Could you tell us a little bit about yourself, your background, and how you became to be involved with the SEO industry?
I became involved with SEO after graduating from College. I maintained a blog and was invited to work for an American SEO company as a researcher until such time that they decided to bring me in and work with them in other projects. You can find more information about me in the about me section of my site www.mktgmnl.com.
I notice that you have a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communications. Has this helped at all with your SEO business and would you recommend that people wanting to get into SEO attend a university?
It is an added advantage to have a degree as it gives you more credibility in terms of knowledge and experience but I would never say that it is necessary. A lot of millionaires are not University graduates, one would say that having a degree is a bragging right and that’s all there is but in the world of SEO there is an equalizing value as I discussed in my site: The State of SEO in the Philippines
How do you personally keep up to date with the latest in SEO? It’s an ever changing industry so SEO consultants by nature need to be on the ball – how do you achieve this?
I subscribe to a number of paid and free SEO forums that keeps me up to date with what works and what doesn’t. Mind you that these people are hard-core SEO’s and are earning in 6 figures on a monthly basis so one can say that they really know what they do and what you want and can guide you as well.
There have been a lot of algorithm changes from Google over the last year. I am sure that you’ve had many potential clients come to you with ranking issues due to past SEO practices they might have undertaken. Do you have any top-level advice for people who have seen their websites take a dramatic hit recently, or incurred a penalty?
One thing I tell them is DON’T PANIC, a lot of webmasters panic and has no patience whatsoever in understanding what happened to their website only to realize that a small flaw has been made by a rogue developer of theirs placing a “no index, no follow” in their robots.txt file.
If their site is penalized I usually tell them a different way of approaching their problem which you can see here: When To Surrender Your Penalized Website
What sets your SEO agency apart from the competition? Are there any unique aspects to your consultancy that gives you a competitive advantage?
I believe that what sets me apart is my passion to deliver results, and my dedication to my craft. I always ascribe to what Yoshikazu Ono said:
“Always look ahead and above yourself. Always try to improve on yourself. Always strive to elevate your craft. That’s what he taught me.”
If you were talking to client in your local area who was unsure about the benefits that local SEO can bring to a business, what would be the key components of your pitch to them in order to convince them?
I usually show them their competitors and where that competitor is at and why they are losing money. Suffice to say I work on letting them understand why they need SEO and NOT sell them the idea. I ascribe this belief to what Simon Sinek said:
“People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it and what you do simply proves what you believe. In fact, people will do the things that prove what they believe. The reason that person bought the iPhone in the first six hours, stood in line for six hours, was because of what they believed about the world, and how they wanted everybody to see them: They were first. People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.”
For any beginners to SEO, what advice would you give them? It could be anything from how to set the business up, to winning business, or just some plain motivational advice.
This could be the hardest question that I’ve encountered in this whole interview but suffice to say, the only advice I can give is that there are two sides of a coin one is failure and the other is success. If you want to be successful be around people who are successful and learn from them that for me is the fastest way to learn SEO.
During your career as an SEO consultant what has been your favourite or most interesting project that you’ve worked on?
The most interesting one is about a site that got penalized algorithmically by Google and then using linkdetox as a checking agent only to find out that it doesn’t work! You can find the rest of it here: How Are We To Know If Your Disavow List Has Already Been Honored By Google?
And lastly, are there any other websites or online projects that you want to tell our readers about – or perhaps any social channels or things you are working on currently?
I would like to invite you to add me up on my Facebook Page and get more SEO updates for your reading pleasure.
